Meet the Creep

Little known fact a group of tortoises is called a creep, and this one is mine. They are a small group that lives happily in the Central Florida sunshine. Nacho and Burrito have been here since summer of 2019 when they were just a little more than a month out of the egg. Fluffy and Sweetums came to me as adults in the fall of 2020 as rescues from an older woman who could no longer take care of them. They are each at least thirteen years old, and Sweetums is likely older than that.

Each of these tortoises has their own unique personalities, habits, favorite foods, and hiding spots. That's just what you get when you keep red foots.

The Originals: Nacho and Burrito

These two were the first. They've been here since they were hatchlings, and are the friendliest tortoises. These two girls are rarely found apart even though they have tons of hiding spots. They are always the first ones to appear when I am working in or near their enclosure.

Both eat anything I put out for them every time food is provided, but Burrito has always been the one to get truly excited about cactus while Nacho prefers hibiscus flowers.

Neither of these ladies is old enough to breed just yet, but I expect Burrito, with brighter oranges and marbling on her plastron, to make beautiful babies one day.

The Big ones: Sweetums and Fluffy

Sweetums is the breeding female here at Totally Awesome Tortoises. She is the friendlier of the the two adults. A big and beautiful girl that is happy to eat from my hand, but she is also quick with a judgmental side-eye. This one has a weird habit of whistling when she's excited. It scared me quite a bit when she arrived here, but she is totally fine. She's just a whistler.

Sweetums is a pretty standard Northern Red Foot, but she is a great mom who often produces six to eight eggs at a time.

Fluffy is the only adult male I have. He is the biggest home-body of the creep. He's the least likely to come out for food with the rest and also least likely to stick around after he's done. This boy likes nothing more than to relax in one of his hides and sleep the day away. This one is an abosolutley stunning tortoise with a bright orange head with no real trace of the yellow that is typical. He also has large patches of orange all the way down his neck. He produces some gorgeous babies that tend to keep those orange heads as well.
